Characterization of the high-temperature behavior of PBF-EB/M manufactured ? titanium aluminides

Abstract Due to their high specific strength and temperature resistance, ? -titanium aluminides ( -TiAl) have a growing importance for automotive aerospace applications. However, conventional processing is very challenging due the inherent brittleness of material. Therefore, new manufacturing techniques methods be established. Additive such as electron powder bed fusion (PBF-EB/M) are favored, since they enable near net shape highly complex geometries. The preheating temperatures, which typically occur during PBF-EB/M, can significantly improve processability TiAl facilitate fabrication parts. In this study, previously optimized material condition ? -solidifying TNM alloy TNM-B1 (Ti-43.5Al-4Nb-1Mo-0.1B) was manufactured by PBF-EB/M. resulting microstructure, defect distribution morphology, mechanical properties were characterized means characterization methods, e.g., CT, SEM, light microscopy, hardness measurements, tensile tests. A special focus on high-temperature behavior. pronounced sensitivity defects internal notches, lack (misconnections) found in as-built condition, identified main cause premature failure below yield point low ductility. This analyzed potential improvements identified.
